The return of Deadman mode to Old School RuneScape
With the current situation regarding the COVID-19 virus, many game companies are mobilizing to occupy gamers during these quarantine periods. Jagex, the company behind Old School RuneScape, is doing its part by hosting a new four-week Deadman Mode tournament starting May 1. Deadman mode is a mode where players risk everything they wear and some of their items hidden in the bank. To compensate for this, all players have access to increased experience rates, ranging from five to 10 times normal experience rates.
In addition to the increased experience rates, some areas of Geilinor, the Old School RuneScape universe, are not available in Deadman mode. Monsters inside Revenant Caves and Lava Dragon Islands do not have their usual loot tables on Deadman Mode worlds. The other area unavailable to players is the endgame boss, Zulrah. In previous editions of Deadman Mode, the “Venom” mechanic was too powerful for the average player, as it can deal up to 20 damage every few seconds. The reason the mechanic was so out of balance was the players’ inability to erase the effect, as the cure for this venom was locked behind the endgame boss, Zulrah himself.
The tournament prize pool
At the moment, no information is available on the size of the prize pool for this Deadman Mode tournament. In the past, Deadman Mode tournaments awarded prizes of up to $ 20,000 in cash prizes. In the latest blog, the developers describe the prize pool as “a substantial charity prize pool, again with fantastic prizes from our partners”.
The event takes place from May 1, with the finals on Friday May 29. The last day of the tournament is broadcast on the official Old School RuneScape Twitch channel, with commentators covering the final hours of the event.
